Masha’s Story

This is a great story on a young Tanzanian woman who 11 years ago she had her back broken by a bus (MVA).

She has been confined to a battered wheel chair. The dirt tracks (roads) which are full of pots holes made it impossible to move around in her broken wheel chair without being pushed.

Her name is Masha Halisou Mbissi, (Marshall) born on the 22/11/79. She was the 7th born in her family. She is now 30 years old. She has a daughter 14 years old. She became pregnant in year 10. She left school at the end 1995. She was a top student through all of her schooling.

Masha is a Tanzanian Citizen, & has been well supported by the Catholic church in Tanzania.

I was introduced to Masha by Father Fidel Safari Mushi a Catholic Mission Priest in early 2009. Father Mushi works in a Mission Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Masha had a problem with her bladder control which we corrected for her with electrical therapy. In general her health is excellent & is disease free. I would like a Neuro surgeon to examine her spinal area to ensure if there was anything else could be done for her.

She had just started an Information Technology course at the start of 2009. Accommodation was provided for her & her daughter as part of her course fees.

She could not find funds to continue & finish the IT course. She recently moved into a slum area with nothing.

A Deception Bay Medical goods supplier called Mobility & You (www.mobilityandyou.com.au) donated to her a brand new Electric Wheel Chair.

We finally found a person in Tanzania Mr Joel McHomvu who put the Electric Wheel Chair into a container of Queensland goods. We delivered it to her on the 27th of June.

We got the electric chair operating for her quickly & taught her drive it. She was so appreciative of the gift. For the first time in 11 years she is now independent of her daughter & other people who had to push her everywhere. Her daughter can now return to school & continue her education.

Another Redcliffe person Ms Colleen King donated her used Lap Top to Masha. (Photo below), Masha with the computer. This will assist her in getting a job in the near future.

As stated earlier Masha has ½ completed a computer course, but unfortunately in middle July 2010 she could not access funds to continue & finish the IT course.

INTELLIGENCE & DETERMINATION

  • Masha is highly intelligent & a very determined young lady.
  • The amount of money we need for Masha to make her employable & secure a small room for her is as follows.

Completion of her 2 year computer IT course                   US $ 3000.00

Purchase a computer Printer/Copier/Scanner                  US $   500.00

Buy a secure small room for Masha & daughter                 US $ 2500.00
to live in permanently.

Other Office Supplies                                                                      US $ 1000.00

If we can get this young lady employed & in a safe living environment & her daughter back to school it would be a blessing.

We need second hand lap top computers & printers in good working condition.
Please contact us if you can help in any way. We appreciate any and all help.

Many thanks
Ken Henry
